Shinan-gun in Jeollanam-do, Korea, namely called “Cheonsa (an angel) island”, consists of 1,004 islands along the southwestern coastline of the Korean Peninsula. Taking full advantage of such distinct geographic settings, aesthetic themes and colors of each of the islands, Shinan-gun has been providing a number of festivals and events for the locals and tourists upon the slogan “We want to go to island”, as well as making efforts to further develop its tourism industry. This study aims to investigate the pungsu characteristics of the island named “Imja island” located northernmost of Shinan-gun in order to develop the future tourism plans and applications based on those characteristics. To perform the pungsu analysis over the study area, this study employed three different theoretical approaches (or backgrounds) in a simultaneous manner, which include the traditional pungsu theory, modern scientific pungsu theory (or so-called the energy field theory), and googung pungsu theory. To identify and examine the distinct characteristics of the pungsu settings of Imja island, this study developed a novel approach, a multiscale three-step process, which is designed to examine 1) the mountain chains across the entire island at a macroscale, 2) and the terrains surrounded by those mountain ridges and valleys at a landscape-scale, 3) and then the detailed characteristics of the areas enveloped inside and along those terrains (i.e., locations of villages) at a microscale. This three-step approach was performed based on multiple field-based surveys, the results from which could afford the contour plots over the areas of interest in this study. Based on the results from the pungsu analysis, this study suggested three sustainable tourism schemes which can ultimately promote the tourism industry in Imja island, which includes 1) the diversification of new tourist attractions and contents, 2) expansion of new educational contents for tourists, and 3) expansion of new health industry.
