In this study, a school-linked educational program using permanent exhibitions was proposed as one of the ways to utilize The Suwon Museum of History to educate the regional identity of the Suwon region, focusing on the relationship between the regional museum and regional identity. By analyzing the meaning, components, and formation process of regional identity, the education of regional identity was organized, the meaning and role of regional museums and the relationship between regional identity were examined. Based on this, Suwon regional identity was derived through local textbooks and literature research published by Suwon Cultural Center and exhibits that can be used for education on Suwon regional identity were organized by analyzing the permanent exhibitions of The Suwon Museum of History. Finally, perception of the Suwon regional identity and the museum education program were summarized by the group of field experts who are participating in cultural expeditions and museum education program development centered on the Suwon region. By summarizing the results of this analysis, The Suwon Museum of History education program for Suwon regional identity education was developed in 6 sessions, and its validity was verified by organizing a group of field experts and elementary school teachers working in the Suwon area as an evaluation group.
The significance of the study obtained while suggesting such a utilization plan is as follows. First, it was confirmed that the usefulness of The Suwon Museum of History has been sufficiently proven for education on Suwon regional identity, and that it can be used as a way to deeply understand the region for 3rd and 4th graders who study localization.
Second, through the process of revealing the relationship between the exhibits of the regional museum and the regional identity, the students were given an opportunity to explore the regional identity. Through activities that explore the relationship between the exhibits, the regional identity, and the students themselves, it helped to strengthen the relationship between the region and the students.
Lastly, if the previous studies focused on Suwon Hwaseong Museum in the study related to Suwon Regional Museum, this study can serve as a basic data that can be viewed from the perspective of teachers who want to utilize The Suwon Museum of History.
In order to educate Suwon regional identity, activities using the exhibits owned by the regional museums in Suwon should be added to the local textbooks of Suwon City. The Suwon Museum of History will additionally collect and display relics from the 2000s onwards so that young students can give clues to the past through the exhibits.
