This study would investigate the trends of museum education developed in the reality in which it has come to be difficult for the audience to visit the physical space of museum due to COVID-19 and discuss the issues of unface-to-face museum education. It seems that unface-to-face museum education will be settled as an important format of museum education even after COVID-19 ends. Thus, the trends and issues of unface-to-face education recently at its early phase will help settle and spread unface-to-face museum education in the future.
Of 309 museums located in Seoul and six metropolitan cities listed on the Korean Museum Association’s homepage as of August 2020, this study was conducted with 49 museums, excluding those in which children’s education programs are not described on their homepage. As a result of an analysis of children’s education programs implemented in an unface-to-face way from April through September 2020 through the homepages of the 49 museums, the types were divided into “real materials-based”, “video-centered”, and “online real-time.” All three types are important methods for inducing the learners’ participation and communication, and their best merit was the convenience of access from anywhere. However, there was a large gap in whether the education programs are implemented according to the operators of the museums, and the characteristics of individual museums were not clear. Also, the importance of the use of and access to the digital contents of the museums, which can easily be reconstructed and utilized through technological power. Thus, this study presented and discussed important issues in the settlement and expansion of unface-to-face museum education, including “new understanding of museum digital contents”, “unface-to-face learning participation and communication”, and “publicness and inclusive of education contents.”
This study was conducted in the early phase of the execution of unface-to-face education devel oped rapidly in the COVID-19 situation. Through the analysis of the education programs through each museum’s homepage, this study was conducted, focusing on the examination of the overall trends rather than the detailed contents of each program. Also, it would continuously be necessary to approach and discuss unface-to-face education programs for children. Hopefully, this study would be the basis for the detailed discussions according to various types, targets, contents, regions, and operators of unface-to-face museum education in the future.
