The aim of this paper is to survey the various constraints and the degree of understanding of passive voice. In learning about voice, it was confirmed that first, active, passive, and middle voices should be systematically learned and acquired. The reality is that the concept of passives is not easy for English learners in Korea, which is an EFL environment. However, it is clear that they understand to some extent because they learned and utilized the concept of passives while learning English grammar in middle and high schools, but they do not know that there must be constraints for using the sentence structure of passive voice. There are constraints to watch out for in passive, which include verb constraints, object constraints, preposition constraints other than by, and semantic constraints. Only when it is recognized and understood these constraints can learners of English grammar properly understand and use passive voice. Voice should be distinguished between active, passive, and middle voices. And it should be properly utilized, and this should be emphasized and taught in grammar in middle and high schools.
