The stories of Genesis 1–11, known as the primeval history, are often met with skepticism by the modern reader. Many scholars, in particular, are skeptical as to whether the stories in Genesis, which come in different literary forms, contain any historically “objective” facts. Ironically, many of these scholars work within a frame of reference that does not encourage them to explore the stories in a traditional orthodox way. This article will argue that modern ahistorical interpretations of the biblical text, which arise out of an Enlightenment epistemology, should not be considered normative for determining the historicity of the primeval stories in Gen 1–11. Rather, a proper understanding of the historical nature of the biblical text follows from a holistic conception of reality and the nature of the biblical text, itself. In conclusion, this article will propose some parameters which guide a faithbased-historical- approach to reading Genesis 1–11.
