The different types of soil in the parable of Mark 4:1–20 represent different types of people and their response to the message of the kingdom of God. In interpreting this parable, commentators often seek to sort out the kind of people represented by each of the various types of soil. In fact, this interpretive step is crucial for understanding the parable, and it is a step taken in this article as well. One problem with this approach, however, is that it can leave the impression that people always fit easily into one of the four categories. While some people portrayed in Mark’s Gospel may fit neatly into one particular category, others do not. To be specific, the disciples display a level of complexity within Mark’s Gospel that makes simple categorization impossible. This article is an attempt to understand the parable of the soils within the context of Mark’s narrative as a whole, especially in light of Mark’s overall presentation of the disciples. In order to accomplish this task, the article analyzes the four types of soil as they are described in Mark 4:3–9, 13–20; surveys Mark’s overall portrayal of the disciples; and compares the four types of soil with the portrait of the disciples in Mark (while seeking to understand the significance of this comparison for the interpretation of the parable of the soils). The article will argue that the parable of the soils and the portrayal of the disciples in Mark provide differing perspectives on how people respond to Jesus and his message. The parable contrasts the good soil with different groups of people who do not hear the message as they should. The portrayal of the disciples complicates what it means to be good soil.
