The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen, a collection of short stories, deals with the experiences and memories of the Vietnam War from the perspective of Vietnamese Americans who settled in the United States as war refugees. “The Black Eyed Women,” the first story in the volume portrays the ways the protagonist straddles cultural differences between Vietnam and the U.S. until she finally comes to appreciate the way the Vietnamese understand and treat ghosts. She overcomes the traumatic war memories that have long been shadowing her life after she encounters her ghost brother. Rather than resisting the dead who return to the living as apparitions, the protagonist learns to welcome, listen to and finally sympathize with them. If culture is in the process of constant formation and reformation as Edward Said puts it, Nguyen participates in the formation of U.S. culture by representing Asian ways of understanding the dead in The Refugees.
