his paper aims to prove that Thomas Hardy expressed his idea of the relation between determinism and chance in The Return of the Native. Influenced by the contemporary science and philosophy, Hardy’s belief in determinism faded and he came to feel more explicitly the effect of chance in human history. He structures the novel with Egdon Heath symbolizing determinism and eternity in the beginning, and with a dice throwing game symbolizing pure chance in the middle. The relationship between the characters of the novel fluctuates within the sphere of the influence between the two axes. The human relation is always affected by chance and coincidence and the meaning of one’s action is distorted. The way to tame chance and keep one’s meaning is depicted as the major method of controlling the rule of chance.
