This research analyzes adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, focusing on the male-male bonds of characters in his plays and the female character’s pent-up emotion living in a patriarchal society. Shakespeare’s depiction of homosexuality is investigated by Franco Zeffirelli’s camera work, which claims the director’s own homosexual sensibilities in its capturing of lovers and the representations of male characters around them. The attention to youth culture and popular taste since Zeffirelli’s text extends to Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation, which recaptures the protagonists’ struggle with the generation gap in the wake of the new millenium. Luhrmannn visualizes male bonds in the form of transvestism, which also returns his film to the original theatrical world, where boy actors embody female characters and sensibilities. The condition of women in Renaissance England and its relationship to the patriarchal system further realized another adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, which stages Shakespeare and his lover in the theatrical world of Elizabethan era. The fruitful but disturbing mixture of real and fictional worlds, which Shakespeare in Love is set to present, also suggests the gender and sexuality of the Elizabethan world that the protagonists of the film needed to learn to perform both as a character and actor. The adaptations of the text reveal what might have been written in Shakespeare’s play in seeking of a mode of gender and sexuality.
