This article specifies the ways in which the future was mobilized, folded, and inscribed into the planning of Nodeulseom opera house, a place-making project that existed only from 2005 to 2011 in Seoul. To that end, an approach to ‘future geographies’ is outlined in the beginning, highlighting its attentiveness to the constitutive role of the future in the making of ‘anticipatory actions’ here and now. Then, how Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) devised, revised, and ultimately canceled the opera house plan is introduced, focusing on leadership vision, design, and redesigning process. Against this background, the planning is analyzed as an anticipatory action, and the analysis finds a distinctive set of future style, anticipatory practices, and anticipatory logics. At the same time, the spatial contexts in, and the processes through, which the future was materialized as a presence is emphasized, with particular attention to local policy-making and international benchmarking. These empirical findings, whilst confirming the futurity analysis’ usefulness and benefits, reveal a limitation to the approach. Most crucially, confining such an analysis to temporality is insufficient and problematic as the future might have spatial attributes and geographical orientations. Therefore, spatializing the future is argued to be as much important as temporalizing for a fuller-fledged examination and understanding.
