Unlike other African countries, Cameroon was colonized by several countries, including Germany, France, and Britain, especially France and Britain, which divided and colonized at the same time, giving it a linguistic, cultural, and regional identity and inheriting a legacy of serious division. In the process of decolonization in the 1950s, the Cameroonian nationalist movement began, and efforts toward reunification began, centering on the elite of French Cameroon. On 1 October 1961, a UN-led referendum resulted in the independence of the Federal Republic of Cameroon by integrating the British Northern Cameroon with Nigeria and the British Southern Cameroon with the La Republic du Cameron. However, after reunification in 1961, the Francophone government excluded and marginalized Anglophone. The Francophone government has stimulated Anglophone identity by contextualizing the legacy of division during the colonial period to maintain power and conducting dictatorship and bad governance. The dissolution of the Union in 1972 and the change of national name to the Republic of Cameroon in 1984 eventually led to the politicization of the Anglophone region. The current political, social, and cultural divide and conflict situation in Cameroon is highly unstable and likely to escalate into a full-scale conflict or civil war. The establishment of sustainable peace and security in Cameroon must be done through the restoration of the federal system in 1961 and the work of correcting the bed governance that exploits the fragmentation that is a legacy of colonial rule.
