This study examines the change in identity and the idiomatic sensory experience among the users of the Metaverse and discusses the potential of the virtual space as an art therapy space. Recently, the Metaverse has emerged as a platform that not only imitates sociocultural systems such as entertainment, education, economy, and politics but also directly constructs and realizes new systems. As the contents of emotional communication in the Metaverse have been refined and expanded, various forms of artistic expressions and treatments may be applicable. The idiosyncratic nature of ‘emotional communication’ and ‘sensory expression’ in the Metaverse stems from telepresence and interactivity. Since the physical self and the present self are united and/or disunited in the Metaverse, split and integration can also occur in emotional experiences. When a user creates and contextualizes a world in a virtual space, aesthetic contents are created by repeating playful interactivities for the immersion in holistic senses rather than by experiencing physical materials. Since the virtual space accepts ambivalent concepts simultaneously, its users tend to manifest ambivalent emotions, and various symptoms may appear depending on their emotional state and psychological stability. The Metaverse is expected to serve as a treatment room to reintegrate fragmented and transformed self-images through acceptance of ambivalence, connection with reality, and mixing of virtual and physical sensory experiences.
