Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among dietary intake ability, oral health status, and nutritional status in the elderly. Methods: A cross-sectional study consisting of a simple oral examination and questionnaire survey was performed on 154 persons. A survey questionnaire was produced by revising and extending survey questionnaires from previous studies. Information on the general characteristics, dietary intake ability, nutritional status, and oral health status was collected as variables. Correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Nutritional status decreased with decreasing dietary intake ability and oral health status (number of functional teeth and oral dryness). Nutritional status significantly correlated positively with dietary intake ability (r = .414, p < 0.01) and total number of functional teeth (r = .166, p < 0.01) and negatively with oral dryness (r = -.171, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The results of this study revealed that dietary intake ability, dry mouth status, and the number of functional teeth affected nutritional status, whereas general characteristics did not. Therefore, dental professionals and nutritionists must consider dietary intake ability and oral health status when performing oral care for senior patients with nutritional status.
