A Critical Review on the ‘False-Log Theory’ of Columbus’s First Voyage in 1492 Kim, Sung-june During his outbound voyage in 1492 Christopher Columbus recorded shortened sailing distances in the official logbook and his personally estimated distances in his private diary. On the return voyage in 1493, there was no double logging: he recorded only estimated actual distances. The reason why Columbus recorded two distances on the outbound portion has been suggested to be part of a strategy to keep the crew at ease and not too concerned about the length of the voyage. But others believe there may be a different reason, with James Kelly in 1983 maintaining that the so-called ‘false-log theory’ originated from Las Casas’ confusion between Roman mile(millas) and Portuguese league(legua). William Phillips, Jr. and Carla Phillips supported this theory in 1992 and Kyung Chul Jou also adopted it in his 2013 book: Christopher Columbus: An Eschatological Mystic. In this paper, the author supports the traditional view that Columbus adjusted sailing distances to dispel the crew’s fears about the length of the voyage. At the same time, the author suggests that one of the reasons why Columbus recorded shorter sailing distances resulted from him overestimating the sailing speed of his vessels. The actual sailing speed of the fleet is estimated between 3.69 ? 3.85 knots, some ½ to ⅓ knot slower than the speed estimated by Columbus himself. Samuel Morison and Fernandez-Armesto were of the opinion that the shorter distances recorded in the official log-book were rather close to the actual progress made by the fleet. In conclusion, the so-called ‘false-log theory’ results not from Las Casas’ misunderstanding on the distance units but rather from Columbus’s manipulation of the estimated sailing distances.
