The purpose of this thesis is analysing Toni Morrison’s Beloved, focusing on incest in view of Freud’s psychoanalysis. In Beloved, Paul D and Beloved are stepfather and stepdaughter. Although they are not biological father and daughter, Paul D is her substitute father. According to Lacan’s theory, father is a figure who interrupts and divides between mother and child. Paul D tried dividing between Sethe and Beloved two times, but failed. And incest can be a kind of the division. Beloved died in Pre-Oedipus period. As a result of it, she couldn’t go through Oedipus Complex and wanted to complete it through incest with Paul D. On the other hand, Paul D has unclear Father’s name in Lacan’s concept, judging by his committing incest. He couldn’t lead Beloved to The Symbol. In conclusion, he failed to take substitute father’s role. Besides, this thesis states that the incest is based on the dismantled and reconstructed African American family, which originated from slavery system. Lastly, this thesis emphasizes many figures, especially African American community who perform father’s role, regardless of their race and sex.
