Scholarship on French environmental history can be summarized by the tradition of the Annales School, and by a novel research trend that noticeably emerged around 2000. The Annales historians until the mid-20th century regarded the milieu (environment) as an important factor in historical research. However, from the late 1990s, a group of scholars sought to distance themselves from the Annales’ tradition, mostly centered on premodern rural history, and advocated for a new environmental history focused on contemporary urban history.
Despite the presence of these research trends, France was regarded as trailing behind other Western countries in the field of environmental history until the 2000s. However, since around 2008, current French scholarship has made significant progress in the field of environmental history, particularly in response to the challenges of the Anthropocene era. It is characterized by the increase in the number of scholars, and the emergence of organized scholar networks, as well as the diversification of research topics and the adoption of new theories. In addition to historians who explore the Anthropocene and other important contemporary issues, there are also those who are reevaluating the contributions of the Annales School, as well as those who seek to incorporate innovative perspectives from influential scholars like Bruno Latour and Philippe Descola.
