“Image-making” in Biblical Interpretation and Preaching ChongSeong Cheong (Baeksuk University) The Bible adopts numerous different kinds of imagery from its very beginning to the end. It is mainly because the Bible in itself preferred an "effective" medium for better communication with the people of God than a ‘logical language.’ Regardless of their time and place and culture, people also tend to lean towards their emotions and feelings in their daily communication than any logical ways of persuasion. Adopting imagery in preaching is often employed as a powerful mechanism to disarm the counterpart's logic without opposition, as graphically portrayed in the cases of Husai (2 Sam 17) and Nathan (2 Sam 12). Imagery does not exist in the concept and grammar of vocabulary or language in itself, but always changes like a fluid in the culture and community of the human being. In realities, we constantly create and interpret the images of the past. That is why the image-making is so important for the preachers, since in doing so they can face with the realities of the continually changing audience. Moreover, the audience before the preachers of the image-making may grasp, accept, and be melted into the purported message more easily, than sticking to a “dry” form of interpretation. An act of preaching is more than an interpretation about the Biblical truth. Instead, it can be a powerful invitation for the audience to appreciate the Gospel realities with metaphorical imageries(i.e. aesthesis), creating relevant communication in their lives(i.e. catharsis), and participating with emotion and action(i.e. poiesis), as shown in Jesus’ parables and the synoptic Gospels. In the parables of the Good Samaritan, Jesus challenges the Jews of their existing order of love, adopting an extremely powerful and shocking imagery, and characterizing main figures (including the victim) graphically. In the parables of the Sower in the Synoptics, the Gospel writers apparently create their own images, effectively communicating their own theological and ecclesiastical messages with the audience. The modern preachers can use the so-called “mind map” for the verbal image-making, and various visual sources for the non-verbal image-making. By imagery the audience understand their realities and form their thoughts, so much so that any Biblical interpretation and preaching will need to grow closer to the image-making.
