Gwangju Biennale first opened in 1995 has been evolving as one of the most prestigious contemporary art festivals in Asia.
Among the best art exhibitions, ‘10,000 Lives' at the 8th Gwangju Biennale 2010 curated by Massimiliano Gioni was recognized for the innovative ideas embracing the art history. In the extension the creative ideas, Massimiliano Gioni unveiled his unique exhibition discourse with ‘The Encyclopedic Palace’ at the 55th Venice Biennale 2013.
It is not so common to see a master art director to lead world-class art exhibitions back to back in just 3 years. Massimiliano Gioni, as an art director curating both of the Biennale ranked the 25th on the list of the 2004 ‘Power 100’ artist of the year selected by Art Review, the renowned contemporary 따t magazine in UK.
The study is designed to review exhibition strategy of Massimiliano Gioni, directing two of the world 5 best biennale, Venice Biennale and Gwangju Biennale. The exhibition strategy of the master of the contemporary art is expected to be an important milestone to read the trend and status of contemporary art of these days.
With the study as a starting point, it is expected to see more contemporary art studies on comparative analysis between G찌rangJu and Venice Biennale including the study on exhibition strategy of Okwui Enwezor, the director of the 7th Gwangju Biennale 2008 and the 56th Venice Biennale 2015.
