This study aimed to clarify how university students in Japan become interested in Korea and Korean culture and the specific aspects of Korean culture that capture their attention. The study found that Japanese university students have a strong interest in Korea and Korean culture. Their interest typically begins in elementary, junior high, and high school years; they are primarily exposed to it through K-pop. Furthermore, while the Korea-Japan relations are currently perceived negatively at the national level, students believe there is potential for future improvement. Historical and territorial disputes such as the Dokdo dispute, comfort women during the war with Japan, and the forced draft during Japanese occupation are the main factors contributing to this strained relationship. For the relationship between Korea and Japan to improve, promoting cultural exchange, enhancing mutual understanding, addressing past issues transparently, and establishing a new foundation for bilateral ties are crucial. However, the civilian-level perception of the relationship between Korea and Japan is positive.
