This paper analyzes grammaticalization of complex prepositions from five nominals denoting vision, i.e., respect, view, regard, sight, and vision, focusing on their interrelationship among synonyms. Three of them have shifted their meaning and now denote ‘aspect" whereas two others denote real or unreal visual perception. A diachronic pattern analysis reveals that each VISION-CP (Vision Complex Preposition) exhibits a preference in selecting prepositions and undergoes formal simplification over time. The ‘aspect"-denoting CPs show a level of functional competition, whereas ‘vision"-denoting CPs do not, likely due to the fact that they are not grammaticalized to a meaningful extent. All VISION-CPs are of low frequency in recent times, and the decline of the ‘aspect"-denoting CPs is partially due to the rise of their functional non-VISION-CP counterpart.
