William Carlos Williams in his last collected poems, Pictures From Brueghel and Other Poems(1962), presents a method of composition that adds a subjective comment or imagination to the realistic and accurate description of images. This prosodic pattern is in line with the outstanding works in the imagist selections of Des Imagistes(1914) and Some Imagist Poets(1915; 1916, 1917), and is one of the biggest legacies left to him by Imagism, which aimed at sculptural and impressionistic poetry. Unlike typical imagist poems, however, Williams formed his own rhythmic implementation with intonational phrases of American English in use, developed unique triads and triadic stanzas that reveal impressive scenes or meanings in his poems, and showed a very delicate artist"s aspect that amplifies the meaning and effect of poetry through the inner combination of those triads. This is an achievement that Williams reached in his later years. Based on the analysis and discussion of this achievement, this study shows that he was a highly refined imagist poet who thoroughly followed the principles of imagism and built very pictorial and musical poems on them.
