This essay contains a segment of the conference of the Korean-German Unification advisory committee, held on 22-23 May 2023 in the German Chancellor’s office in Berlin and author’s personal observations on the cities in eastern Germany.
During the first session of the conference, the focus of discussion revolved around ‘the present state of German unification’. Specific issues addressed included migration of highly educated Eastern Germans to the West, a notable average income disparity of 15% between the Western and Eastern Germans, as well as the absence of any companies from the East German area listed on the Dax (German stock exchange).
Despite the aforementioned challenges, the Eastern German cities including Magdeburg, Halle/Salle, and Erfurt present a visually appealing and well-maintained appearance, while the cathedrals, churches, city halls and museums, monuments, cultural relics have been reconstructed or repaired, exhibiting no noticeable distinction between the cities of the East and West.
The German unification and integration process will serve as a valuable model that can offer guidance for the unification of the Korean Peninsula.
