The paper explores the nature of military rule in Myanmar and provides background knowledge on why the military became prominent and how it consolidated. In retrospect, its rule had been institutionalised via the Revolutionary Council(RC) from 1962 to 1973 and the Burma Socialist Programme Party(BSPP) regime from 1973 to 1988. Military rule had been consolidated via political institutions such as a constitution and a party system. Furthermore, the research provides an account of how the socialist rule failed and the resurgence of military rule by the new leadership of Tatmadaw. Amid social and political crises during the 1980s, Tatmadaw restructured itself by disengaging from its predecessor. Although the new leadership of Tatmadaw assumed power, its rule resembled the previous regimes. This can be proved by the current military rule by the coup has attempted to legitimise its rule from the reliance on the 2008 constitution, an election and a proxy political party.
