This paper reads Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey as a novel that challenges the male-centered social structure and normative femininity by pursuing a space for female friendship focusing on Catherine’s mobility. In the novel, female bodies are isolated in the domestic space and their mobility is restricted under the code of feminine conduct. As female friendship is trivialized under the pretext of controlling their conduct, it is difficult for women to build relationships outside the home. Previous studies have focused on the physical isolation of women in the gothic space of Northanger Abbey and the images of powerless women. However, Catherine, unlike other heroines in Austen’s novels, asserts her mobility. “Walking ... with great elasticity,” Catherine navigates the limited boundaries of space and norms. Her walk deviates from censorship and creates a social space for other women in which they can overcome physical distances and build their own friendships. Walking diligently around Bath and Nothanger Abbey, Catherine sets up a space for intimate communication with her friend and finally succeeds in building and maintaining friendship. Her independent walk resists the patriarchal authority of General Tilney, gets the chance to take a walk with Eleanor and even reaches the forbidden room of Mrs Tilney. In doing so, she reconstructs the home, the core space of domestic ideology, into a space for female friendship.
