This paper aims to clarify the socio-cultural significance of the reception of The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari 源氏物語) in colonial Korea, focusing on the 1910s and 1920s. After an isolated appearance in the eighteenth-century, The Genji begins to appear within the colonial-period public sphere of newspapers and magazines and thus encounters a latent Korean readership. During this period, The Genji was invoked mainly within the discourse produced by modern intellectuals, for whom the act of writing itself was imbricated in the ideals of social reform and enlightenment, and thus functioned as an instrument to articulate anxieties within Korean society and thus as a window through which to understand Korea’s experience of modernity. I shed light on this reception and situate it in socio-historical context.
