This study focuses on the pathological aspects of Tamura Kafka and Saeki, the main characters in Kafka on the Shore , among Murakami Haruki’s works. Not only in , Kafka on the Shore the pathology of the characters appears frequently in Haruki’s literature . Why did the writer Haruki mold a pathological character and repeatedly use the structure of a story in which a character suffers from mental problems and then dies in his novels? It is discovered that, through this process, Haruki’s literature has the power to requiem the dead and give salvation to the survivors. Kafka boy, the protagonist of Kafka on the Shore , develops feelings that he has been abandoned by his mother because his mother left home at his age of four, and grows up hearing a prophecy from his father who remains that “You will one day kill your father with your own hands and have sex with your mother.” The boy becomes a character with pathological tendencies of being unable to make friends, withdrawing into his own world and being violent towards his friends, as he develops a wound in his heart because of those words. In addition, as an alter ego of Kafka boy, an intellectually disabled old man Nakata appears and rescues Kafka boy from the autistic mental world.
In this study, it is clearly shown that the text Kafka on the Shore is a story of recovery and regeneration, and at the same time, it also suggested a method of regeneration to the author as well.
