As the use of pets in rural tourism is increasing recently, the need for the related information is increasing. This study analyzed 171 types of names to make it easier to distinguish and know the characteristics of companion dogs, which are representative pets. The origin of the companion dog’s name is region+breed name(26.4%) > region+characteristics+breed name(14.0%) > regional name(11.7%) > regional name+dog(7.6%) > regional name+shepherd’s dog(4.7%) > regional name+appearance(4.1%) > mated(4.1%) > appearance(3.5%) = size+breed name or size+regional name(3.5%) in order. There were 127 dog names reflected in the names of companion dogs by 73.7%, and 89 names were compared to unique breed names and its characteristics with 52.1%. The words commonly used in the companion dog names were hound, retriever, setter, haired pointer, and herding dog, which had a high proportion of things related to hunting and herding. Therefore, the origin of the companion dog’s name reflected a lot of terms related to regional name and hunting. It was expected that the origin, purpose and appearance characteristics of the companion dog could be easily known through the origin of the dog’s name.
