The construction of high-rise buildings due to urbanization provides residential and commercial spaces, but also causes environmental problems. Accordingly, issues related to air pollutants are frequently raised in metropolitan areas. In this study, changes in concentration by hour, month, and season were analyzed using air pollutant concentrations and wind speeds measured at 17 air quality monitoring stations in Incheon from 2018 to 2022, and the relationship between air pollutant (e.g., NO₂) concentration and the total volume of buildings ratio at each point was analyzed. We calculated the total volume of buildings with a radius of 1 km and a height of 150 m vertically centered at each air quality monitoring systems using the geographic information systems. The NO₂ concentration tends to be high during morning (from 7 to 9 LT) and evening (from 19 to 21 LT) rush hours. It is found that the NO₂ concentration showed a positive correlation with the total volume of building ratio. Among the factors affecting the NO₂ concentration, wind speed showed a negative correlation with the concentration. In addition, the concentration showed positive correlations with road on-road mobile and non-industrial combustion emission amounts, while showed a negative correlation with energy industry combustion emission amounts. In conclusion, the NO₂ concentration in Incheon increases as the proportion of building-occupied area increases, as the wind speed decreases, and as the NO₂ emissions from on-road mobile and non-industrial combustion sources.
