The purpose of this article is to explore the theological meaning of the firstborn son, Israel, in the Pentateuch with a canonical approach and to grasp how such meaning is established. Its origin is to be found in Genesis, after which it is explained in detail in Exodus. After the Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai, they participated in a process that established the right of the firstborn son. This paper explains in detail the conditions required for one people to be considered a rightful firstborn son. First, its origin is examined in Genesis, after which its process is analyzed in three parts. Above all, the priestship of the firstborn son is dealt with in Exodus and Leviticus, which explain the priestly duties he must carry out. Secondly, his power of representation is written in Numbers and Deuteronomy. The result of the analysis shows that the path of the firstborn son is not easy. Deuteronomy explains why God has chosen Israel as a firstborn son of the various peoples in the world. Thirdly, his right of inheritance is accounted for on the basis of the covenant of their grandfathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), under which God made a promise to them that they would inherit the land. Theologically, the concept of the firstborn son, Israel, shows that he is not simply a country in a world, but has a purpose for the entire world. Its concrete expression is that “you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” and it is well summarized in the three rights mentioned above. This article thus concludes that the firstborn son is a critical concept to comprehend the identity of Israel.
