In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the research dynamics and development direction in the field of college student depression, this study searched and screened the scientific research literature on college student depression published at home and abroad in the past 20 years based on the core databases of the China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS), and used the CiteSpace visual analysis software to conduct bibliometric and knowledge mapping analyses. The results of the study show that the number of research publications on college students’ depression has shown a significant growth trend in the past 20 years, and the global attention has increased; foreign countries have formed a more stable core research group in the field of college students’ depression research; domestic research is mostly based on cooperation with the same institution, and needs to be strengthened in the aspects of resource sharing and information exchange; and the mode of research cooperation in foreign countries tends to be more cross-institutional, and the researchers abroad have a good reputation for The domestic research focuses on the epidemiological characteristics, influencing factors and interventions of college students’ depression, while the foreign research focuses on the in-depth understanding of college students’ depressive symptoms, mental health maintenance strategies, and effective methods of stress management and anxiety reduction. In the future, research on depression among college students should pay more attention to interdisciplinary cooperation and use advanced data analysis techniques to conduct long-term tracking studies in order to gain a deeper understanding of the causes and trends of depression among college students, so as to provide a scientific basis for the development of effective mental health intervention strategies.
