Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine teaching competency in the affective learning domain of physical education as recognized by pre-service elementary teachers and explore some factors influencing their teaching competency.
Method: A phenomenological study, a qualitative research method, was conducted by selecting six preservice elementary teachers at a national university of education. Data collection was done through individual in-depth interviews with the participants conducted at the beginning and end of the semester. The inductive category analysis proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1988) was carried out, including open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. To increase the validity of the derived research results, peer review and member checks, as suggested by Merriam (1998), were completed.
Results: Two major themes were drawn as ‘teaching competency of affective learning domain’ and ‘learning experiences in courses during pre-service teacher education curriculum influencing teaching competency of affective learning.’ The first theme comprised two sub-themes namely ‘difficulty in teaching affective learning’ and ‘development on teaching competency of affective learning.’ The second theme indicated two sub-themes such as ‘limitations on physical activity courses’ and ‘positive experiences in the methods course for physical education.’
Conclusion: Based on the results, this study suggests future directions for various courses related to physical education to prepare pre-service elementary teachers to have teaching competency in the affective learning domain.
