The purpose of this research is to investigate the aesthetic correlation between the art of Jackson Pollock and Jazz by extracting the aesthetic features of Jazz appearing in Pollock’s abstract expressionism. For this, the theoretical backgrounds and aesthetic features of these two arts were examined, and a comparative analysis was conducted on the creation process, expression technique, and inherent artistic perspective. Furthermore, the connection between the world of Pollock’s works and Jazz was researched. The common aesthetic characteristics of Pollock’s abstract expressionism and Jazz are as follows. First, they have freedom and originality liberated from tradition and basic structure. Thus, the innovative spirit and fresh sense of the artist are inherent in the artworks. Second, they have the improvisation based on instinct. Based on this, artists manifested highly skilled technic according to their intentions. Third, the creation process itself was considered as an artwork, and the artists assigned it with artistic value. In conclusion, Pollock’s abstract expressionism and Jazz, which occupy distinct places in their respective art fields, have aesthetic connections, and they have been inherited and developed up to the present. This tendency demonstrates the boundless potential of different art types to expand the prospect of art through shared inherent aesthetic values.
