This paper aims to shed light on Emily Brontë’s Dark Romanticism, Gothic traits, and distinctive poetic style by analyzing the allure of darkness in “The Night Wind,” a notable early poem that has received little attention in domestic studies, despite its excellence. “The Night Wind,” a brilliantly powerful poem, establishes her as a major Victorian poet and highlights her distinctive characteristics as a Dark Romantic writer. Written in 1840, this early poem is a captivating and significant piece that reflects many central themes in Brontë’s poetic world and serves as a foundation for the development of her later poetry. The vivid imagery, haunting atmosphere, German Romantic influences, relationship between nature and humanity, and death in this poem all contribute to Brontë’s unique poetic style and sensibility. In Brontë’s personal poem “The Night Wind,” which is not part of her Gondal works, we see her Dark Romanticism and Gothic characteristics, views on nature, reflections on death, exploration of mysticism, and the struggle of being a Victorian female poet within the context of Romantic male poetics. Through her unique poetry, which stands apart from those of other female poets, we gain a closer understanding of Brontë’s complex and captivating personality, and fans of Wuthering Heights will find her poetry just as fascinating and powerful as her novel.
