The current study aims at comparing the reading section of 3rd-year middle school English textbooks of Korea, China, and Japan. For this study, 5 textbooks of each country were selected and analyzed in terms of genres and subject matters of the texts, and reading activities. As the result of the study, each country preferred a certain genre such that in Korean textbooks an excessive inclination toward narration was found, while Japanese textbooks included practical texts much more than Korean and Chinese textbooks; the textbooks of the three countries dealt with a high proportion of subject matters related to general knowledge; and various reading activities for inferential comprehension including reading strategy use were found in Korean textbooks, whereas the textbooks of the other two countries focused more on simply memorizing grammar points and vocabulary. In-depth analysis on the findings and teaching implications were discussed.
