(Purpose) This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of foreign workers in the construction industry regarding basic safety and health training, and by presenting directions for the development of their safety consciousness, participation behaviors, safety culture, and education, it sought to contribute to improving safety management and training programs at construction sites.
(Design/methodology/approach) For this purpose, a survey targeting foreign workers was conducted, including a literature review.
(Findings) The research findings revealed that, first, foreign workers believe safety education is effective and highly rate the effectiveness of digital education methods. Second, regarding the impact of safety education on safety consciousness, it was found that safety education contributes to the rate of safety practices and that workers effectively apply the content of safety education at the sites. Third, it was noted that there is a negative perception regarding systems for proposing safety improvements at the workplace or regularly asking employees for their opinions on construction safety. Fourth, the need for digital human-based safety education was generally indicated to be above 4.0, showing a high level of necessity, especially the opinion that safety education using digital humans helps improve learners' knowledge and practice rates of basic safety rules was the highest. Consequently, foreign workers recognize the importance of safety education and particularly show a high satisfaction level with digital-based education methods. However, communication difficulties were pointed out as one of the main factors hindering the effectiveness of safety education.
