This paper introduces a novel configuration of the powertrain and a mechanism for recapturing energy in hybrid hydraulic excavators, aiming to diminish energy use and lower emissions. The innovative system is meticulously engineered to optimize engine performance and harness the energy recovered during the boom and arm retraction phases. Featuring a unique powertrain design, our approach utilizes a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to drive the principal pump, ensuring meticulous control over the engine’s rotational speed and torque. This guarantees the engine’s operation within its most efficient range. To recuperate the potential energy from the boom and arm, we have implemented an energy regeneration mechanism. This stored energy can subsequently be used to either recharge the battery or directly power the main pump. Additionally, we employ an energy management strategy rooted in an equivalent consumption minimization approach to judiciously allocate power, thereby enhancing engine efficiency. In comparison to both existing hybrid systems and traditional setups, our simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methodology yields energy-saving efficiencies of 16.9% and 77.1% at high velocities, and 22.25% and 53.5% at medium velocities, respectively. This study marks a significant stride towards achieving more sustainable and efficient operations of hydraulic excavators.
