This study analyzed the characteristics and social implications of storytelling used in the Chinese animated documentary Chinese Animation Education: Silent within Noise. To achieve this, the concept of animated documentaries and the implications of expert characters were first examined. It was found that in animated documentaries, expert characters serve as key figures representing the redefinition of reality, objectivity, and changes in power dynamics. Subsequently, the current state and challenges of Chinese animation education were examined. The Chinese animation education sector was found to be facing limitations due to factors such as instructors’ capabilities, standardization of the curriculum, and a disconnect between students’ education and the industry. The analysis revealed that Chinese Animation Education: Silent within Noise is a reflective animated documentary composed of former and current professors, industry experts, and university students. It was shown that the expert characters in the documentary cover a wide range of themes, including self-reflection, issues with policies and universities, and social issues. This study provided insights into how Chinese documentary animation functions as a medium for self-reflection and social critique.
