This article examined the public perception and educational con- cept of Hong Gil-ju through the Suksunyom. In the Suksunyom, Hong Gil-ju emphasized that not only individual Self-cultivation but also institutions and policies must be supported at the same time, but all villagers can have fun together. Education was considered an im- portant means of ‘Dongrak (同樂, to enjoy together).’ Paying attention to this point, this paper examined how Hong Gil-ju tried to use edu- cation to realize an ideal society. He conceived the following. There are things to be done together/together (‘與’, ‘共’, and ‘together’) in society. First of all, in the case of ‘Sa⼠’, Zi (志) and practice (業) must be shared. Second, it is necessary to operate Yongwon (⽤壽院), Samjaewon (三再 院), and Jinchegwan (津逮館) so that anyone can share and utilize practical knowledge such as goods, medicine, and fortune-telling as well as morality such as virtue and courtesy. To this end, Hong Gil-ju proposes a realistic view of education. He recognized that it is im- portant to select jobs, not a natural identity or hierarchy. In addition, it was considered that an institutional arrangement was necessary for talented ‘Sa’ to read freely even if they were not selected as bureaucrats. Rather than emphasizing only the morality and integrity of individuals, more realistic help was needed to demonstrate their talents. To this end, he actively affirmed the public role of wealth and goods, away from the passive and negative view of wealth.
