Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore how the public’s perception of doping and the academic interdisciplinary paradigm changes using keyword analysis. Based on this, it was intended to consider the direction of anti-doping education, attempt to approach doping from the general public’s perspective, provide clues to provide basic data for practical anti-doping and eradication, and suggest future directions for anti-doping education.
Method: This study examined the evolution of social discourse and issues related to doping since the revision of the World Anti-Doping Code. To achieve this objective, newspaper articles published over a 21-year period, specifically from 2009, 2015, and 2021, following the enactment of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s World Anti-Doping Code in 2003, were utilized as research data. For data collection, articles were gathered by period using the BIG KINDS database, followed by a data purification process. Text mining analysis was performed using Textom, and semantic network analysis was conducted using Gephi version 0.10.1 to thoroughly investigate the changes in social discourse and issues related to doping over time since the revision of the World Anti-Doping Code.
Results: A frequency analysis of words by period was conducted based on revisions of the World Anti-Doping Code to extract key terms from newspaper articles related to doping across different timeframes. TF-IDF analysis was performed on the collected data to examine social issues through the key terms identified in the newspaper articles. Additionally, semantic network analysis was conducted to analyze the structural connections between words in the articles and to uncover the meanings of the keywords.
Conclusion: Anti-doping education in Korea should develop systematic and continuous programs through clear goal-setting and target-specific approaches, grounded in fairness and ethics. Furthermore, it is essential to enhance athletes’ awareness of doping through prevention-oriented education and to encourage their participation through diverse educational methods. This approach is expected to fundamentally address the doping issue and foster a healthy and fair sports culture.
