Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of applying a maker education program for five-year-old children on their initiative and creative problem-solving abilities. Additionally, it aims to explore the "maker mindset" experienced by children during the making process. Method:After reviewing prior research and consulting with experts, 32 maker education programs were developed around four themes. A total of 82 five-year-old children from the Seoul metropolitan area were selected and divided into experimental and control groups. The maker education program was applied to the experimental group for 16 weeks. To analyze the effects, the children's initiative was measured using the tool developed by Oh Sook-Hyun (2004), and their creative problem-solving ability was assessed using the tool presented by Treffinger (1989) and reconstructed by Lee Soon-Bok (2010). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0. Results: The study confirmed that the initiative and creative problem-solving abilities of the experimental group improved compared to the control group. Additionally, data collected during the program were examined based on the four elements of the maker mindset summarized by Dougherty (2013): "playfulness," "value and growth orientation," "positive failure," and "collaboration." Conclusions: This study is significant in that it presents the direction of maker education suitable for young children and explores the potential for its application in early childhood education.
