This paper is designed to examine whether one of the poetic characteristics of the Southern faction Nam-in scholars can indeed be considered as the creation of social poetry, by analyzing the patterns and characteristics of social poetry created by these scholars. In Chapter 2, social poetry is first defined as poetry that “satirizes the flaws of the political system, criticizes the absurdities of social reality, and reflects the suffering of the people.” It is then subdivided into political critique poetry, social denunciation poetry, poetry reflecting the hardships of the people’s lives, and poetry dealing with the suffering of the people caused by disasters and wars.
In Chapter 3, the paper investigates several factors that led Southern faction scholars to create social poetry and examines the actual creative patterns of this poetry. The first discussion concerns whether the political ordeal of exile is connected to the creation of social poetry. Through the works of Lee Min-gyu(李敏求, 1589~1670), Choi Yu-ho(蔡裕後, 1599~1660), and Lee Seo-yu(李瑞雨, 1633~1709), it is confirmed that Southern faction scholars, having endured political exile, came to recognize and criticize the social realities of their time, expressing this critical thought through poetry.
The second aspect discussed is the close connection between social poetry creation by Southern faction scholars and the hardships caused by disasters, famine, and other adversities. Specifically, it is demonstrated that Southern faction scholars, including Jeong Yeok-yong(丁若鏞, 1762~1836), expressed the suffering of the people through poignant poetry about disasters.
The third discussion focuses on the tendency of Southern faction scholars to logically and systematically analyze social issues based on practical learning Silhak and propose solutions. This is particularly evident in the works of 18th and 19th-century Southern faction scholars such as Jeong Yeok-yong(1762-1836), Ahn Deung-bok(安鼎福, 1712-1791), and Lee Ga-hwan(李家煥, 1742-1801). These scholars, by criticizing the corruption of Joseon society, the incompetence of the ruling class, and the suffering of the people, expressed a strong sense of social responsibility as intellectuals, creating numerous pieces of social poetry in the process.
