Gieun(祈恩) during the Goryeo Dynasty refers to the implementation of a “special ritual practice” conducted as needed for a specific purpose. It involves selecting relevant deities and ceremonial practices from existing rites to respond immediately when divine protection is required in a given situation. Gieun was carried out in various locations under the auspices of the state and the royal family, including the palace, mountains and rivers, temples (寺社), and shrines (神祠). It took the forms of rituals such as Taoist rituals(醮齋), mountain and river rituals(山川祭), and shamanistic ceremonies(巫祭). Over time, Gieun reflected different ideological aspects: in the early and mid-Goryeo period, it bore the characteristics of Buddhist and Taoist rituals, while in the late Goryeo period, shamanistic elements became more prominent. As shaman-led Gieun ceremonies became widespread, the term eventually came to denote “shamanistic rituals” during the Joseon period. This shift signified the gradual fading of Gieun’s original attribute as a “special ritual practice”, and during the Joseon Dynasty, it became known as “Gigo(祈告)”.
An examination of the structure of Gukjooryeui(國朝五禮儀), the official state rituals of the Joseon Dynasty, reveals that in addition to major(大祀), medium(中 祀), and minor(小祀) state rites, categories such as Gigo(祈告), Sokje(俗祭), and provincial rites(州縣) were separately classified under “Distinguished rites(辨祀)”. Gigo referred to rituals conducted as needed in response to disasters or major state events, consisting of elements included in the major, medium, and minor state rites. This suggests that Gigo, much like Gieun, involved the implementa- tion of existing rites as special ceremonies rather than regular ones.
From this perspective, Gieun of the Goryeo Dynasty and Gigo of the Joseon Dynasty share the fundamental identity of being “special ritual practices” and the “repurposing of existing rites”. Their purposes, ritual locations, deities, and relationships with Bosa(報祀) offerings exhibit similarities. Although differences exist due to changes in ritual perceptions, many commonalities can still be identified, allowing for an understanding of their continuity. This study seeks to compare and link Gieun and Gigo, aiming to establish their diachronic correlation.
