Dasan(茶山) Jeong Yak-Yong(丁若鏞, 1762~1836) was a garden lover. He loved flowers and growing vegetables, so he made and enjoyed gardens wherever he lived. The purpose of this study is to learn about his utopia of dwelling. He pursued it through his writings on the imaginary garden.
The Joseon society in the 18·19C flourished garden culture. People loved for floriculture and even showed passion for flowers. People who wanted to make a garden increased and those who were unable to make the garden in reality enjoyed the garden culture by creating an imaginary garden through writings or paintings. For them, garden life was a way to escape the hard world and lead to a reclusive life.
The vibrant garden culture of the late Joseon Dynasty was also reflected in Jeong Yak-Yong. In the extreme situation of exile, he created an imaginary garden through writings and pursued a reclusive life in it. Those writings were like blueprints of his dream ideal dwelling. His imaginary garden depicted a utopia of consilience through the harmony of practicality and art, the expansion of garden boundary, and the harmony of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Through this, he pursued the elegant life of a reclusive scholar.
