Burnout, defined by emotional exhaustion, lack of control, and insufficient managerial support, is increasingly common in healthcare, education, and office work, with a McKinsey survey reporting one in four employees worldwide experiencing it. While workload is often blamed, this study highlights the crucial role of physical office environments in either worsening or alleviating burnout. Poorly designed offices—lacking proper lighting, privacy, and natural elements—intensify stress and fatigue. In contrast, thoughtful spaces with biophilic elements, ergonomic furniture, and effective partitions enhance well-being and productivity. This qualitative research, including a literature review and six case studies (three in South Korea and three in the United Kingdom), examines the influence of spatial layouts, lighting, natural elements, and partitions on employee well-being. The findings emphasize the importance of balancing collaboration and privacy, optimizing lighting, and incorporating nature to reduce burnout and promote well-being. The study concludes that aligning workplace design with WELL standards improves employee engagement, satisfaction, and long-term organizational performance.
