This study analyzes the design elements of the public space of a domestic general hospital through the evaluation element of the WELL Building Standard, a health building certification system, and proposes ways to improve the design of public spaces. Since the 2000s, general hospitals have been changing into spaces that take into account the satisfaction of patients and guardians with the expansion of scale, and the concepts of eco-friendly and health architecture are being introduced. However, research aimed at improving the well-being of general hospital space users is insufficient. Since this study aims to propose a health architecture design that considers user health and well-being beyond eco-friendly architecture, three G-SEED certified general hospitals which were newly constructed or expanded within the last 10 years, were selected as case studies. The general hospital public spaces were classified into lobbies, waiting spaces, rest areas, corridor, toilets, and vertical cores, and the following are the conclusions from the case study analysis based on a restructured WELL Building Standard focused on design elements. First, additional ventilation systems or operable windows should be installed for ‘air’ concept. Second, for ‘light’ concept, varied lighting color temperatures help defining spaces for user comfort. Third, for ‘mind’ concept, separate relaxation areas with privacy features are effective, while open spaces could benefit from flexible furniture layouts. Fourth, for ‘community’ concept, color-corrective way-finding design technique like CUD(Color Universal Design) is necessary for accessibility in lobby areas.
