The purpose of this study is to figure out the educational needs for Korean college students’ competency of AI use, based upon the differences in their perceived importance and actual performance of AI-utilized tools in the classroom. To accomplish this research purpose, it specifically aims to uncover 1) How important did Korean college students perceive the use of AI tools for their English learning? 2) How much did the students perceive that they actually use AI tools for their English learning? 3) What are the most urgent educational needs regarding English learning competencies for using AI in the classroom? Fifty students responded to the IPA survey, and the collected data were analyzed by using IPA and the Borich needs analysis. The analytical results suggested that 1) learners have already secured basic skills in using AI tools and interacting with AI in English learning, 2) they have a significant educational need for higher-order competencies regarding critical evaluation of AI-generated output and strategic modification based on AI-provided feedback. Lastly, pedagogical implications and suggestions for the AI-assisted language instruction were also discussed.
