Across the UK, the urgent need for economic recovery, similar to that experienced in other European Union member states (and further afield), is bearing down heavily on governments. Youth unemployment is a growing problem with significant long-term consequences for individuals, employers and local communities. This article examines differing approaches to careers and work inspiration policies and practices in each of the four home nations of the UK. It draws upon findings from a research study in England on understanding business links with schools and the National Careers Service. From this, work inspiration drivers for change and supportive systems of employer engagement with schools are discussed. The UK’s national supplies of skills are not well matched to economic demand. Something is going increasingly amiss for young people who are trying to gain access to sufficient high quality work experience. Other countries have their own challenges for a younger generation trying to gain a suitable foothold into work within an ageing society. Some brief reflections are offered in the context of South Korea. Overall, stronger partnerships between employers, educationalists and career development professionals are vital to achieve greater connectivity between more young people and the world of work.
