This study explores that Wordsworth is an environemtnal ethics-based poet and his "Nutting" can be valued from a perspective of environmental ethics. For this purpose, this paper demonstrates four forms of environmental ehtics and centers its explanatory focus on Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. Leopold stresses human ethical obligation to nature by expanding the conception of community from human to natural. For Leopold, natural entities are communal members that require human beings to be humble. Wordsworth's short lyrics written in his great period show some biocentric features proposed by Leopold. "Old Man Travelling"
describes an old man as if he is part of the natural surrounding, and it thereby reveals the poet" s desire to nullify the boundary between human beings and the natural world. "Lines Written in Early Spring" depicts the vitality of nature and deplores the man-made world. The poem suggests that sentience cannot be an absolute standard to exercise the power of humans over the natural world. Like these lyrics, Wordswortn s ''Nutting'' is biocentric because of Wordsworth's recognition that nature is alive. The speaker of the poem, a boy, despoils the grove, which can be associated with rape. After the ravage, he recognizes that there is a spirit in the woods and advises the reader to be gentle toward nature. Wordsworth's emphasis on the boy' s guilty feeling leads to an emphasis on ethical responsibilities to nature. This growth of the consciousness is significant in that it admits nature as a member of the ecological community, but the guilty feeling, which engenders the growth, is problematic in that it sustains the binary opposition of man and nature.
