In the Korean modem literature, as soon as a theory is suggested, there always an objection or other viewpoint to that opinion can be raised. All logical systems are easy to fail in the context of the specific environment. Therefore, a mission of Korean modem literary scholar is drawing a details of our own literary texts and discovering new meanings. Thinking between the universal and the special, the center and the local, we try to seek after the alternative meaning of Korean literature.
In the history of Korean novels, Yeom Sang-Seop is a writer seldom to find. He trys to depict the social life at that time realistically and pursuits the extreme of the imagination of the colonial period. The limits of his naturalism are resulted from the speciality of Korean modernity, not by his will. His novel named "A green frog in the specimen room"(표본실의 청개구리) is estimated a
national allegory over the naturalism as a institution of the west.
Culture is always relative and unique one. Some postcolonial theorist says that the colonial experience, a relation of conqueror and conquered, is in fact universal. In aesthetics, colonial experience also exists. Western universality acts as standard, center, and dominant knowledge. But I think we need especially rethinking the local, reestimated the unique feature of Korean literature. Postcolonial thinking makes us decolonize from the naturalism as a universal institution. Above all, My purpose here is less to insist national myths than to elaborate and possibly renewal and expand the boundary of the Korean literature.
