This study analyzes the major Families in Yi Danasty, which we define as Families which had produced more than 10 successful candidates in the civil service examination. We classify the major Families into three categories depending upon the number of successful candidates they had produced : Representative Families, Influential Families, Important Families.
The distribution of successful candidates from those major Families shows that there are 70 offspring 100 姓氏(surname). It also shows the more 本貫(ancestral Families) a surname had, the more successful candidates it produced. The six Families of Lee, Kim, Park, Jung, Cho, Yoon which account for 5%, produced 54% of successful candidates, suggesting there exists a clear link between major surname and major Families.
12,878 successful candidates, which is more than 90% of all successful candidates, were from 199 Families, which accounts for 30% of the 664 Families which produced at least one successful candidates. This implies that the major Families which produced more than 10 successful candidates, which just accounts for 4.4% of all the Families in the Danasty, produced more than 90% of all the successful candidates, compared to 9.6% of the successful candidates produced from all the other Families put together, that is, 2,079 native Major(土姓). This reflects unbalanced proportion in the distribution of successful candidates in terms of Families.
We also veiw changes in the society of the Danasty by considering the changes in the number of successful candidates in each century. It is shown that the number of successful candidates from the major Families increased with the passage of time. In the 15th century, when the Danasty was being established, successful candidates were produced from a wide variety of Families. In 16th-17th century, the number of successful candidates increased due to the growth of Power of Sarim(士林勢力) in localareas and frequent Pulsi(別試). From the late 18th century to the early 19th century, we see a stable distribution of successful candidates from the so - called Bulyuls(閥閱), the ruling segment in the late Danasty, which was based on Seoul. In that sense, it should be noticed that the ruling class had become much more diversified in the Yi Danasty, compared to those to those of nobility in the Korea Danasty.
More important than the mere number of successful candidates played in the central political field. Therefore the mere number of successful candidates should be distinguished from the number of successful candidates who later took positions higher than Dangsankwan(堂上官; core of political operation). This reflects that not only one's ability but his family background were considered at the central political stage. This reveals the limitations of the bureaucratic society of the upper classes in the Dynasty, in which success in the civil service examination was considered important. It also means that the elements of the class system had long been rotted in the Dynasty.
In this study, we see characteristics of the upper classes in the Dynasty through an analysis of successful candidates from the Mager Families.
